The present invention relates to an optical recording apparatus that provides improved writing speed. In the processing means (50) an encoded data signal (NRZ) is processed, and a first clock generator (52) generates a two-level clock signal (CLK). Furthermore, a duty cycle modulator (MOD) modulates the clock signal (CLK) in response to the encoded data signal (NRZ) so as to vary the duty cycle of the clock signal (CLK), possibly with a plurality of phases.
