The device for machining workpiece edges, especially for knives, scissors etc. uses a grinding roller. The edge faces, viewed in cross-section, have a shape differing from the straight and in their longitudinal direction they are moved transverse to the grinding roller by means of a slide. The grinding operation is controlled by a cam, a cam wheel and a transmission linkage. The transmission linkage (1) is a parallelogram linkage. The working or grinding roller (2) and the cam wheel (9) are fitted on similarly aligned angle arms (4, 5) each with a fixed axis of rotation (6, 7). The free ends of the angle arms (4, 5) are hinge connected by a couple rod (8). The cam/template profile (3) represents a positive image of the shape of be ground.
