Electrolysis cell utilising bipolar electrodes for prodn. of Cl2 and H2 from hydrochloric acid comprises a number of individual cells assembled in the fashion of a filter press to form a block of cells. The ratio of width to height of the electrolysis cell is 2-10:1, pref. 3-6:1. The cell configuration and consequent reduction in electrode height result in improved energy utilisation. temp. increase in the cell is reduced and therefore cooling requirements are minimised.
