The lighting unit comprises a casing open along its horizontal base and containing one or more light sources working with a reflector aimed downwards. A removable light diffuser is a clearance fit in the base, and comprises a flat horizontal plate of translucent material suspended in the casing. One or more hooks (7) extend upwards from the edge of the plate (5), being open towards the underside and engaging with catches (61, 6) pendulum-suspended on horizontal axes (62) on the casing periphery. Each catch extends beyond the casing and diffuser and through the gap left between them so as to form a control finger (64).
