An extraction vessel containing a filter element (14), e.g. a mash tun, has a peripheral wall portion (1) and a floor portion (2) which is movable away from the top portion to an open position (0) to permit discharge of the spent particulate solids, e.g. grain. By providing a floor portion comprising a vessel (9) and a straining plate (14) closing the top of the vessel and by hingeing (19) the floor portion on the wall portion. the floor portion in open position presents a downwardly sloped straining plate over which the spent solids pass smoothly to a collector.
