PURPOSE: To obtain a polyethoxylation or polypropoxylation fatty alcohol having a high Q value by using a specific alkaline earth salt of a polycarboxylic acid monoester. CONSTITUTION: The alkaline earth salt of the polycarboxylic acid monoester of the formula [R-(OCm H2m )n -O-CO-A(COO<-> )o ]p M<2+> (where R is a straight chain or branched 1-22C alkyl or the like; A is an unsatd. acyclic or cyclic 2-6C hydrocarbon having 2 or 3 bonds or the like; M is Ca, Ba or Sr, m=2 or 3, n=1 to 20, p=2 at o=1 and p=1 the o=2) is used as the catalyst for polyethxylation or polypropoxylation of an active hydrogen-contg. compd. This catalyst is readily soluble in a reaction system, is short in reaction time and is capable of yielding the polyethoxylation or polypropoxylation fatty alcohol having the high Q value.
