A backing gas tool for inert gas shielding of a weld seam root side can be sucked tight to the welded fabrication by vacuum chambers 11, 13 that are drained of air by way of a connecting piece 25. The inert gas is then fed to the weld seam root side via a diffuser 19 and removed via outlets 21, 23. As a result backing gas shielding can also be achieved when welding together large, extensive plate fabrications, there being no need to rely on free edges to which the backing gas tool can be clamped. <IMAGE>
