To remove a contaminating layer of a liquid of lower specific gravity (e.g. oil) floating on a liquid of higher specific gravity (e.g. sewage), the liquids are forced to flow along a settling tank towards a collector (5) whose open bottom is disposed well below the boundary (10) between the liquids. The top of the collector (5) is sealed to an inclined weir (3) dipping just below the boundary (10) so that the contaminating layer ascends the weir, assisted by air jets from nozzles 4, and flows into the collector (5). A discharge duct (6) is disposed in the collector (5) with an adjustable inlet arranged in a plane higher than the liquid-liquid boundary (10) but lower than the surface (14) of the contaminating liquid in the collector (5). The collector and nozzles are supported by floats 2, and duct 6 is connected to tank outlet 8 by a flexible tube 7.
