Thioxanthenes of formula (I) and their acid addn. and ammonium salts are new (where X is H, lower alkyl, halogen, CF3, -SR', -SO2R', or -SO2N(R')2; R' is lower alkyl; Y is H or F; the dotted line in ring A is an optional bond; and Am is a gp. of formula (II)-(V). Z is N- or R4 is lower alkyl; R2 and R3 are H, halogen or CF3). (I) are antipsychotics, anxiolytics, sedatives, hypnotics, and potentiators or anaesthesia. A typical product is 4- 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazinyl -2'-trifluoromethyl-spiro cyc- lohexane-1, 9'-thioxanthene . This was prepd. by heating 2'-trifluoromethyl-spiro cyclohexane-1, 9'-thioxenthene -4-one with N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine and p-toluene sulphonic acid, eliminating water as it formed and reducing the product with sodium borohydride.
