Prepn. of N-(1-ethyl-2-pyrrolidinylmethyl)-2,2-diphenyl-2-hydroxyacetamide (I) is carried out by subjecting methyl benzilate (II) to aminolysis, pref. with 1-ethyl-2-amino-methylpyrrolidine (III):- (I) is useful as an antiarrhythmic agent. The process is simpler and gives higher yields than the known process in which benzilic acid is reacted with PCl5, the resulting acid chloride is reacted with (III). and the product is hydrolysed.
