The grip mat for recovering vehicles from snow or soft ground has an electric support sheet (25) with a pattern of holes through which are threaded dumbell shaped metal studs (33). When placed under a driving wheel the studs are pressed into the ground and also grip onto the tyre tread. The studs operate independently and without damage to the tyre. The mat is securely driven into the ground and is not thrown clear of the wheels.
