Half sections of foamable thermoplastic plastics work-pieces are formed in a split two-part mould, each half of which is displaceable axially way from each other. The mould is positioned within a steam chamber so that the contents of the mould can be heated. The steam chamber also contains orificed tubes for the subsequent introduction of a coolant. In order to accelerate this following cooling process the steam chamber is constructed so that it can be opened to the ambient atmosphere. This is achieved by the use of transverse walls forming part of the steam chamber on opposite sides of the mould, and which are movable axially away from the mould and the centre part of the steam chamber.
