<p>A net-like, adhesive-stabilised fabric is claimed having a rectangular grid of pairs of closely-woven stripes at fixed intervals, which acts as a template for the fixing of tiles to a ceiling, wall or floor. The ground fabric consists of uncoloured glass fibre threads with a leno weave, with stripes pref. of black polyester threads, 14 ends wide longitudinally or 21 picks wide transversely, in plain weave with leno edges. The fabric is produced on a loom having spacing devices, comprising a series of discs with pyramidal-shaped teeth around the circumference to engage the narrow gap between the two stripes of one pair-unit, which are mounted on a common shaft behind the fabric take-down roller, to preserve the correct spacing of the stripes until the threads are fixed in position by an adhesive coating. The fabric is lightly pressed into a surface of fresh mortar to produce a rectangular network of slightly raised mortar beads corresponding to the edges of the tiles to be laid, outlined by the black stripes of polyester threads defining the positions of the tiles. The tiles can then be laid in the correct positions quickly and simply, even by unskilled labour.</p> |
