A sliding clasp fastener of the concealed type comprises a pair of stringer tapes 10 each with an inwardly folded edge portion 11, a row of helical or meandering fastening elements 12 formed from a single synthetic plastics filament secured to the lower side of each folded edge portion 11 and a slider S slidably mounted on the stringer tapes. Each element includes a coupling head 14 joining two legs 16, and a portion 15 connecting one of the legs 16 to a leg of the adjacent fastening element. The folded edge portion 11 fits tight against a recess 17 in the upper leg of the element and the loop portions of sewing threads 13 are disposed inside a recess 17 in the lower leg of the element. In a modification Fig. 2 (not shown), a recess may be provided only in the lower leg portion. A resilient braid 20 is inserted between the legs 16 of the elements 12 and extends longitudinally of the entire length of the fastener. The braid prevents the stitching 13 from shifting out of position and controls the spacing between the legs of the elements when the latter are flexed toward each other under sewing pressure. In a modification the spacing braid 20 is replaced by warps of the weaving threads constituting the stringer tapes, Fig. 4 (not shown). The recesses may be shaped so as to be deeper toward the coupling head of the fastener element, Fig. 3 (not shown). |
