A female contact 40 having at least one contact arm 41 with an outwardly diverging tip end 44 for guiding the tip of a male blade inserted into the contact is housed in a chamber having a contact arm abutment 36 mounted on the chamber sidewall 31 and projecting inwardly into the chamber. The abutment 36 is aligned with the contact arm 41 of the female contact and is spaced outwardly from that arm to set the limit of acceptable outward contact arm deflection. A portion of the contact arm extending rearwardly from the diverging tip end 44 is channelled to allow this end to clear the abutment 36 when the contact is inserted longitudinally into the chamber from the rearward end 38 thereof. The abutment 36 limits outward displacement of the contact arm 41 to prevent the overstressing of the arm by an engaging male blade and may be formed as a unitary part of the pocket sidewall 31.
