The machine comprises a work- piece carrying plate (1) and a tool (7). The plate is mounted to be rotatable about a first axis (X-X) constituting the main axis of the toric groove to be machined or ground and pivotable about a second axis (Y-Y) orthogonal to the first axis and intersecting the centre (O) of an elementary section of the toric groove. The tool is a disc having a main plane which contains the second axis. Devices (34, 37-39 and 35) are provided for driving the disc in rotation about its axis of revolution and in translation in a direction F defined by a straight line which is perpendicular both to the axis of revolution of the tool and to the second axis.
