The step generator has an input shaft whose angular position is to be determined absolutely. An angular step coding discs, opto-electriconically scanned. Each code disc is driven by a preceding disc through stepping-down gears. At least two coding discs (24a-24e) are provided in a plane, with axes of rotation (32a-32e) parallel and eccentric to the input shaft (12) axis.
