The high-pressure cylinder is provided with a casing (8) within which chamber rings (2) for guiding a piston (1) are arranged. The end pressure (or the intake pressure) of the high-pressure cylinder is linked via a restrictor (9) with a chamber which is subdivided by a free-floating differential piston (12) into a gas space (10) and an oil space (11). As the effective cross-section of the piston face facing the oil space is less, taking into account the cross-section of the piston rod (13), than the face facing the gas space (10), the oil pressure acting on the outer face of the chamber rings (2) is somewhat greater than the end pressure (or intake pressure) of the high-pressure cylinder. As a result of the damping of the pressure surges in the gas space (10) and the effect of the restrictor (9), the risk of fatigue fractures in the high-pressure cylinder is reduced. Moreover, any leak is signalled by the position of the piston rod (13). <IMAGE>
