The article which can be produced on a flexible conveyer has an absorbent core layer (12) formed by a corrugated tissue layer (20) located between two layers (14, 16) of a soft, loose fibrous material. There are upper (24) and lower (22) cottonwool layers, the lower cottonwool layer (22) initially being folded in the longitudinal direction around the absorbent core layer (12) and the upper cottonwool layer (24) then being placed on top of this. The upper and lower cottonwool layers are then crimped together by a roller, punched out and turned about 90 DEG . Subsequently, a liquid-impermeable polyethylene film is then provided with an adhesive line along its edges, is placed on top of the upper cottonwool layer and wound around the upper cottonwool layer and the core layer where it partially overlaps the lower cottonwool layer. A strip of a bonded fabric (34) is then wound around the structure and provided with at least one longitudinal strip of a pressure-sensitive adhesive material. A removable protective paper (38) is located above the adhesive material. The lower layer (16) comprising the loose fibrous material is provided with recesses (18) which take up abruptly occurring quantities of material more quickly than would be possible by absorption and thus prevent leakage. The recesses (18) are formed by embossing the fabric in each particular region and strongly compressing it. The article is capable of absorbing large, abruptly occurring amounts of liquid, so that leakage is prevented. <IMAGE> |
