The evaporator for use with a refrigeration system, comprises spaced plates interconnected by at least one elongate closed hollow member extending perpendicularly through all plates. Water or a eutectic substance is contained in the hollow member, a first conduit extending through the hollow member for conveying a refrigerant. A heater extends through all plates at a location spaced from the hollow member for heating then when they have to be de-frosted.
