The vice has fixed (13) and mobile jaws (11) and the linear displacement of a wedge shaped slide (26) is utilised to effect perpendicular displacements of the mobile jaw. The slide has a threaded hole traversed by a threaded shaft (31) and its displacement is effected by rotating the shaft. The mobile jaw assembly includes a mobile thrust block (11), the slide, a fixed counter block (12) and the threaded shaft (13). The slide has at least one inclined face which slides along a similarly inclined face (23) on either the thrust block or the counter block. Two slides (25, 26) may be deployed and may be mounted in opposition on inversely threaded lengths of the shaft (31). The slides, thus, displace in opposite directions to effect perpendicular movements of the thrust block.
