Piston for fuel injected IC engine - has cooling oil flow to piston combustion space liner regulated by piston temp. dependent ball valve

The piston (1) has a recess (2) in the crown which forms the combustion chamber. The wall of the recess is formed by a liner (3) which leaves a gap (5) between itself and the mass of the piston. Oil to cool the combustion chamber flows through the gap. A nozzle (13) sprays it in through a regulating valve (14) and openings (14) release it back into the crankcase. The valve has a ball (10) loaded by two springs (11, 12). One of these (12) is made from a bimetal strip so that the spring force and therefore the valve opening varies according to the piston temp.
