<p>An aq. sporidical compsns. contains (1) 0.75-4.0 wt. % glutaraldehyde and 4-15% of a mixt. of phenol and metallic phenate, the phenol concn. being 3-10% and the metallic phenate 0.5-5%, their respective ration being 5-7:1; (2) 1-5: wt.% sodium tetraborate; (3) 2-10 wt. % of >=1 anionic or nonionic surfactant, partic. sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate or sodium cocoyl- sarcosinate, and (4) 2-10 wt. % of a humectant, which is glycerol, diethylene or propylene glycol. A specific compsn. contains (by wt.) 7.05 % phenol, 1.2% sodium phenate, 2% glutaraldehyde, together with 2.35% sodium tetraborate, 6.3% diethylene glycol, 5.6% sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate and 3.3% sodium cocoylsarcosinate. The pH is 7-10, pref. 7-7.4. The compsn. is used to effect sterilisation at ambient temps., having sporicidal, as well as bactericidal, fungicidal and viricidal activity. Although alkaline solns. of glutaraldehyde have a sporicidal activity, this is lost with time. Addn. of phenol prevents this problem, and sterilising activity is maintained for >=30 days. Effective sterilisation is achieved at ambient temp. after 6.75 hrs.</p> |
