Customer and program data may be amended in telephone systems only by authorised persons in a central remote management station (FV). Since the data are intended to be transmitted via normal telephone lines, these lines must be particularly well protected against unauthorised access. To achieve this, a connection is set up by the remote management station (FV) to the equipment in the customer's system which is intended to carry out the amendments. Once this connection has been cleared down, the customer's equipment (SMS) independently sets up its own connection to the remote management station. Only after an identification procedure are the amendment data retrieved step by step and acknowledged (SFV) and only after the contents of the control memory (DSP) in the customer's system have been amended is an amendment report prepared in the remote management station (FV). <IMAGE>
