The system determines the height of material in a shaft, fibre bale etc., using a photo-electric system with sender and receiver. A drive or feed mechanism is controlled by the material height. Two or more receivers (2, 3) are moved in the vertical direction, and the impulses from both actuate the drive moving them when the end of the material is outside the space between them. The drive can also actuate a height indicator. The sender (1) can work with two movable receivers coupled to a control unit (4), in turn connected to a drive or feed mechanism (10).
