Field-effect liquid crystal display unit - has microstructure in substrate formed by parallel beams of ions with injected electron beam

The liquid crystal display has the microstructure in its substrate (1) formed by ion bombardment. A gas discharge is used to generate parallel beams of ions which impinge on the surface of the substrate at an angle. The ions pass through an accelerator an their way to the surface. An electron beam is injected into the ion beams before or as they strike the surface. An array of craters (2) is formed. The electron beam is injected at right angles. The ion beams are produced by a dc discharge. The substrate has numerous craters inclined at an angle to its surface. The advantage lies in being able to produce structures over large areas.
