The display has a flat fluorescent lamp with flat sides. There is an indicating section formed by one of the two side surfaces. The display can be a letter, a pattern or a figure, etc. part of which can be opague. The other section of the display is formed by the application of opaque paint, straight onto the side surface of the fluorescent lamp (1). The lamp is divided into a section (3) which produces the display and another section (2) which does not transmit the light. The opaque section can be formed by a foil or paper.
