A screw press for the dewatering of suspensions consists of a perforated tube in which the feed is charged by a screw conveyor. The counter pressure is exerted by a lid which is urged against the discharge opening of the tube by a biased device. This device is so designed that its thrust pressure is greatly reduced in the maximum open position of the lid. This is a simple press with an automatic discharge which permits the discharge of long strands of dewatered material without breaking it up unnecessarily.
