A method of and apparatus for the reduction of molten copper by reaction with the elemental constituents of a liquid reducing agent which has undergone volatilization and thermal decomposition in a lance before coming into contact with the molten copper, including self cooling means for introducing said reducing agent below the surface of the molten metal bath.
