Tubular membrane filter with end seal sleeves - which have conically increasing diameters with tapering wall thickness so that seal at inner end is better than remaining section

A membrane filter unit consisting of several parallel tubes of a filter membrane supported by a fibre mat tube, supported, in turn, by a structural tube of a solid material such as metal, is equipped with seal sleeves placed in the ends of the membrane filters whose function is to effect a seal between the filtrate and the feed sides of the membrane. The structural support tubes are fixed in end flanges at each end of the tube, pref. by a suitable adhesive, and are perforated to permit the flow of filtrate from the clean side of the membrane into the filtrate collection chamber. The seal inserts pass into the open ends of the tubes and are so arranged that the primary seal point is at the lower end of the sleeve. This is pref. achieved by means of an enlargement of thesleeve at the lower end and a slight tapering of the wall thickness so that some flexibility is imparted to the material. The use of the above seal enables membrane filters of this type to be used for filtering pressures in the range 10 to 150kg/cm2 without the risk of the feed fluid flowing along the membrane clean side and entering the filtrate collection chamber.
