<p>Stilbene cpds. of formula (I): are used as optical brightening agents for high molecular organic materials other than textiles. In (I), X is phenyl, naphthyl or a 4-biphenyl go. R1 is H 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, Cl, cyclohexyl, benzyl, alpha, alpha-dimethylbenzyl, 1-4C alkylsuphonyl, 2-5C carbalkoxy, carboxy, opt. substd. carbamoyl, sulpho or opt. substd. sulphamoyl, or together with R2 forms a trimethylene gp. in the 5,6-position of the benzoxazole ring or, if X is phenyl, R1 and R2 together may form a 1,3-butadienylene gp. in the 4,5-position of the benzoxazole ring system, R2 is H, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or Cl or together with R1 may form the gps. described above. R3 is H or, if X is phenyl, R3 may also be 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, Cl carboxy, 2-5C carbalkoxy, CN or R3 and R4 together may form a methylenedioxy-, trimethylene or tetramethylene gp. R4 is H or if X is phenyl, R4 may also be 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, Cl or R4 and R3 together may form the gps. described above, and R5 is H, Cl or sulpho gp.
