Sweetening agent for an edible material is of formula (where R is lower alky6; R' is H, OH or alkoxy; and the stereochemical configuration is L-L, DL-DL, L-DL or DL-L). (I) may be used as a low-caloric non-nutritive sweetening agent, and is esp. useful in diabetic diets. It has no unpleasant after-taste, good stability, is crystalline and is non-hygroscopic.
