Chemical reactor for processing a fluid stream flowing into a bed of discrete solid elements, e.g. catalyst particles, has a no. of elongated baskets for removing impurities from the fluid stream located in the reactor with their longitudinal axis aligned with the direction of fluid flow. Each basket has a bottom end wall and sidewalls, the bottom end wall and lower portion of the sidewalls adjacent the bottom end wall being of open mesh construction. The upper portions of th sidewalls are of closed construction and the top end of the basket has a closure provided with one or more orifices. Each basket is inserted into the bed of solid elements so that a part of the closed upper portion of the sidewalls lie below the surface of the bed. the basket design ensures that the whole bed is utilised to remove impurities.
