The heater (10) has an electric resistance element (1a) which is applied through the contacts of a thermostat (4) incorporated in the heater. An auxiliary heater (5) gives a small amount of local heating to the temperature sensitive capsule (4a) of the thermostat. An additional local heater (15) adds to the capsule heating. This heater is switched with the unit heater (1a) so that it comes into effect only when the unit is on. The local heating of the thermostat is thus made partly dependent on the output of the unit which results in finer overall temperature control than is otherwise possible.
