The compsn. comprises a blend of (A) an alkyd resin of hydroxyl value >=300 mg.KOH/g., (B) (partially) etherified lower alkyl ether of an aminoplast; and (C) an acidic catalyst, having a pKa in water of 2, for the reaction between the OH gps. in (A) and co-reactive gps. in (B), in an organic solvent comprising a major proportion of aliphatic hydrocarbon. The compsns. can be applied to a substrate using a hand-held applicator, e.g. a brush. The resin may be crosslinked by a process other than autoxidation to produce a coating of high gloss and good resistance to deterioration esp. discolouration.
