A cooled roof for an electric furnace comprises a roof ring mounting beams-headers which carry a framework of loop-shaped tubes. Metal straps are welded on their edges to the top generatives of the tubes and refractory bricks are placed in rows between the straps. The ends of the bricks rest on adjacent tubes and are arranged with a clearance sufficient to enable thermal expansion. The roof has an extended service life and minimum heat losses. Sections of worn out lining may be replaced without removing the roof from the furnace. Fewer bricklayers are required to make the roof lining. Cracking and upalling of the roof is avoided.
