The safety mechanism for a centrifugal or drum washing machine, using a magnetic switch system on the door lock, has an additional rotary and mechanical intermediate unit. On one side this acts with the programming circuit and the position of the door in the housing, and on the other side it controls the axial movement of a disc on the rotary axis of the programme switch unit when the door or lid is opened. The system gives a high degree of safety in operating the washing machine, irrespective of the type of programme switch and its mounting in the equipment.
