2-Mercaptobenzothiazole is prepd. by reacting nitrobenzene (I) or nitrosobenzene (II), H2S and CS2, opt. under pressure with each other, using a (I) or (II)/H2S molar ratio of 1:3-6 or 1:1.5-4 resp. and a (I) or (II)/CS2 molar ratio of 1:1-3 and the final reaction temp. being 200-300 degrees C at least. Compared to known processes using aniline as starting material, the above process uses milder reaction conditions, shorter reaction times and also results in higher selectivities and yields. Prod. is useful as a vulcanisation accelerator.
