The device consists of a rod (2) of square cross section whose end is attached to the end of a seat belt webbing. The rod is guided in a bushing and performs its translatory movement following a sudden deceleration of the vehicle between two rollers (17). As the rod is made of a deformable material the two rollers reshape the section (3) in such a way that triangles (8) are rolled-off and flat surfaces (7) are created on the rod edges. The impact energy following a sudden deceleration is absorbed in transforming the cross section(3).
