PURPOSE:To obtain a sharp positive or negative display of high display quality by setting the product DELTAn1.d1 of the refractive index anisotropy DELTAn1 of the liquid crystal in a 1st liquid crystal layer and the thickness d1 of the liquid crystal layer to 0.7-2.0mum. CONSTITUTION:The peripheries of three substrates are sealed with seal materials to form two layers where liquid crystal is to be injected, nematic liquid crystal materials which have positive dielectric anisotropy and are twisted in the opposite directions are injected into the 1st liquid crystal layer 4 that an ITO electrode patterned in stripes faces and a 2nd liquid crystal layer 3 where no counter electrode is formed, and the injection holes are sealed. Then the 1st liquid crystal layer 4 has a 240 deg. clockwise spiral twist and the 2nd liquid crystal layer has a 240 deg. counterclockwise spiral twist; and the DELTAn.d1 in the 1st liquid crystal layer 4 is 1.00mum and the DELTAn2.d2 in the 2nd liquid crystal layer 3 is 0.95mum. Thus, a black and white display having an excellent characteristic of an angle of field is obtd. |
