The plate shaped element for making book covers, cases, albums, containers etc. consists of a reinforcement inset (36) and at least one plastics foil (42) on its front and back pages. The plastics foils are welded to each other along the outline of the reinforcement inset and the plastics foil (42) of the front page is fitted with a visible mirror finsh layer preferably a steamed on metallic mirror layer.
