The shaft furnace is heated by fuel, pref. oil or gas, fed through burners located in the shaft, e.g. central burners located on carriers, or burners mounted on the shaft walls. The burners and/or their carriers are cooled by a cooling liq. which has a b.pt >100 degrees C. and which flows through a closed circuit. The coolant is pref. a heat transfer oil, esp a silicone oil, and its working temp. range is pref. adjusted to 100-270 degrees C., esp. to 200-220 degrees C. The coolant is pref. cooled in a cooler employing air to re-cool the silicone oil. Alternatively the oil can be cooled by heat exchange with the fuel, i.e. the latter is preheated by transfer or heat from the coolant, thus improving thermal efficiency. The use of a coolant with high b.pt., e.g. silicone oil provides a substantial increase in cooling efficiency so that additional burner supports such as transverse beams are not required.
|
