<p>A defoliating agent for cotton plants, which will inhibit sprouting, dry out the leaves and is a herbicide, contains dialkyl-halo-p-nitrophenol(s) of formula (I): (where R1 and R2 are alkyl or cycloalkyl, and X is halogen). (I) are more powerful than the known S, S, S-tri-n-butyl-phosphorus trithioate, which is also an effective defoliating agent. (I) is also a herbicide, selective or total, depending on the amt. used. (I) is effective against dicotyledonous weeds such as Sinpais, Urtica, Amaranthus, Cirsium, and Viola, against dicotyledonous culture plants such as Gossypium, Phaseolus, Solanum, Nicotiana, and Brassica, against monocotyledonous weeds such as Echinochloa, Digitaria, Poa, Avena and Alopecurus, as well as against monocotyledonous cultures such as Oryza, Avena, Panicum, Saccharum and Asparagus. (I) are also effective against threats to hygiene and are fungicides, esp. effective as seed disinfectants and cereal fungicides. (I) are also effective against apple scab and against Pyricularia oryzae in rice.</p> |
