1479880 Purification of aqueous glycerol KAO SOAP CO Ltd 10 May 1976 [22 May 1975] 19157/76 Heading C2C An aqueous solution of glycerol containing cationic impurities, e.g. sodium ions, is purified by adding methanol and sulphuric acid to the solution to precipitate the impurities as insoluble sulphates, removing the precipitate, e.g. by filtration or centrifugal separation, and then removing the methanol, e.g. by distillation, thereby obtaining a purified aqueous solution of glycerol. The starting aqueous solution may for example contain 30-95 wt. per cent glycerol, the methanol may be added to give a 30-70 wt. per cent solution, and sufficient sulphuric acid to neutralize the solution, and give a pH of 6-6À5, is desirable; the precipitate is preferably removed at 35-60‹ C. |
