Lead particles are removed from the exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine by deflecting the gases radially through holes (11) in the inlet pipe (10) to impinge on a wire mesh or expanded metal packing in a first annular chamber (12) for absorption of lead particles, the gases then passing through a chamber (8) in which a helical vortex flow is imparted to the gases by baffles (19-21), the gases then entering a convergent duct (24), backed by a further porous packing 26, where centrifugal separation of further lead particles takes place. The particles pass through slots 25 into packing 26 while a reversal of the gas flow direction occurs at the narrow end of duct 24, followed by axial straightening of the gas flow by radial partitions 28 before discharge of the gases through apertures 32 into an axial outlet pipe (18). The device also acts as a silencer.

|
