The current limiter/circuit breaker is provided with means for cutting the current in the event of a surge. In addition to a first pair of contacts (53, 70) actuated thermally or magnetically, a second pair of contacts (153, 155) is provided on current-conducting blades (152, 154). Electromagnetic means of actuation (148a, 156, 182) with movable armature, bring about separation of the contacts of this second pair in response to a current surge in the said blades (152, 154) which exceeds the value of the surges required to actuate the contacts of the first pair. To provide for this performance, an auxiliary electromagnetic arc-diversion arrangement (188d, 181) is provided in order, at the requisite moment, to supply a magnetic field directed perpendicularly to the electric arc forming during separation of the contacts of the second pair. <IMAGE>
