PURPOSE:To produce an ester having extremely light color, easily, in high yield and at low cost, by adding phosphorous acid, etc. to the reaction system of the esterification of a carboxylic acid or its anhydride with an alcohol in the presence of an acidic catalyst. CONSTITUTION:In the esterification of a carboxylic acid or its anhydride with an alcohol in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as sulfuric acid or p-toluenesulfonic acid, an extremely light-colored ester can be obtained by adding phosphorous acid, hypophosphorous acid or their salts, and boric acid to the reaction system. The amounts of phosphorous acid, hypophosphorous acid or their salts, and boric acid are within the range of 0.0001-5 wt.%, preferably 0.001-2 wt.%, each, based on the theoretical yield of the ester, and there is no limiation to the ratio of both additives. |
