The trans- DELTA <2>-prostaglandins of formula (XXXII) where R<1> is an alkyl radical, R<2> is H or an alkyl, R<3> is H or an alkyl, X is a trans vinylene or ethylene and Y is a cis vinylene or ethylene, are prepared by oxidation of a compound of formula (I) where R<4> is preferably a 2-tetrahydropyranyl radical and the compound obtained is subjected to an acid hydrolysis. The products thus obtained are used for the preparation of prostaglandins active against hypertension, thrombosis, asthma and digestive ulcers, and useful in aiding labour in gravid mammalian females. <IMAGE>
