In a method and an apparatus for making helically finned tubing a helical groove 101 is rolled into a tube 10 by means of a peripheral protrusion 100 on a roll 40, the base of a fin, formed with a tapered cross-section by a flanged roll 90 and a roll 92, is inserted into the groove and a part 102 of roll 40 and 104 of a roll 42 coaxial with roll 40 deform the metal on each side of the groove to, secure the fin in place. A second part on roll 42 reinforces the deformation caused by part 102 of roll 40. The rolls 40, 42 are rotatably mounted on a yoke which is movable toward and away from the tube in response to spaced switches which detect the ends of tubes passing through the apparatus. On detecting the trailing end of a tube being finned the rolls are moved away from the tube and the fin loosely engages the tube until the leading end of the next tube actuates a switch and the rolls are moved into engagement with the next tube. The switches are adjustable to allow a desired length of unfinned tube at each end of a tube. |
