Aromatic (poly)carbonate prodn. from phenol and carbon mon:oxide - in presence of a base, a platinum group metal and an oxidant

Prodn. of an aromatic carbonate (I) is effected by contacting a phenol, CO, a base, a gp. VIII element, namely Ru, Rh, Pd. Os, Ir or Pt (Pd) and, as oxidant, an element, cpd. or complex with a greater oxidn. potential than the gp. VIII element. The base is pref. a sterically hindered amine, pref. a tert. amine, esp. 2,2,6,6-N-pentamethylpiperidine. The oxidant is pref. O2 and a redox catalyst is used for the oxidn. of the gp. VIII element. The reaction can be carried out in the presence of an inert solvent. The process can be used for the prodn. of mono- and poly-carbonates, which are useful for the prodn. of polycarbonates and as polycarbonates per se for making films, sheets, fibres, laminates or reinforced plastics.
